Food that causes acidic bloodstream and tissue conditions creates an environment for disease to flourish.
Your body processes everything you put into your mouth. Some food is used, some is eliminated and some is stored. Your body breaks down the food you eat into the simplest form of the basic nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) and uses them to build cells and tissues, create hormones and to provide energy. Any waste materials are eliminated. When the quality of the nutrients is poor (refined grains and sugar, snack foods and fast food) there is more waste and less energy and building materials. The body must store some of the synthetic and chemically modified nutrients and preservatives in the fat tissue, among other places. In general, the closer to natural source and the less processed the foods you eat are, the better it is for your body.
All foods have either an acid or alkaline nature. Since the blood is naturally slightly alkaline, it is best for the diet to consist of more alkaline foods than acid foods. When the blood becomes too acidic disease takes a foothold because viruses and bacteria like an acid environment. Free flowing red blood cells have more ability to carry oxygen to the tissues. When they stick together they can’t travel into smaller blood vessels easily leading to fatigue. The body uses valuable resources and energy to unstick the red blood cells.
Foods such as meats, alcohol, coffee, fried foods, bread and refined sugars are acidic. Most vegetables and fruits are alkaline. So if you have a habit of eating meat, french fries and a soft drink you are consuming mostly acids and throwing your body chemistry off balance.
The symptoms of excess internal acidity include:
- Fatigue / low energy
- Unexplained aches and pains
- Overweight conditions
- Low resistance to illness
- Unbalanced blood sugar
- Irritability / mood swings
- Colitis / ulcers
- Diarrhea / constipation
- Urinary tract infections
- Rectal itch / vaginal itch
The natural ratio between alkaline and acid foods in the diet should be 4:1—four parts alkaline foods to one part acid. Maintaining alkaline bloodstream keeps the blood cells free flowing for optimal health.
Emotional and psychological tension can act as a prime promoter of acid formation in the body. To appreciate how acidic stress can be, think back to the last time you were seriously stressed-out and used an antacid tablet to soothe your heartburn or stomach discomfort.
